The manual with the mic I bought (August 2020) states under the heading "Using the microphone with a laptop" that there is "no need to install battery".

I followed this and the mic did not work on my laptop (Windows 10, Version 2004, OS build 19041.450) even after following numerous how-to blog posts and YouTube videos.

The simple solution to make the Boya BY-M1 mic work in Windows 10

1. Insert the battery. Yes, despite what the manual says.

2. Switch the mic to Camera.

After these two simple steps, it was simply a matter of plug and play in my experience.

Battery tip for Boya BY-M1 mic

After using the mic, switch it to Off/Smartphone to conserve battery.
